Thoughts on In Pluto's Cave

"Photographs, which fiddle with the scale of the world, themselves get reduced, blown up, cropped, retouched, doctored, tricked out. They age, plagued by the usual ills of paper objects; they disappear; they become valuable, and get bought and sold; they are reproduced. Photographs, which package the world, seem to invite packaging. They are stuck in albums, framed and set on tables, tacked on walls, projected as slides. Newspapers and magazines feature them; cops alphabetize them; museums exhibit them; publishers compile them" pg 2

Photos can last a long time or can be very short lived. I never really thought about how much photographs go through so much within time. The fact the photographs can age faster than humans and easily die out as in disappear or get lost just like humans is crazy. So many things can happen with photos that are printed, but as society has advanced photos are never really lost now or just old and fragile but tucked somewhere in a file. As stated in the book which I agree with, photos do have control and holds as proof what has done. Photography can be used for anything to express excitement and fun to show who is a criminal or prove that a terrible crime has been committed.

"Photographs may be more memorable than moving images, because they are a neat slice of time, not a flow. Television is a stream of underselected images, each of which cancels its predecessor" pg 13

I kind of disagree with this statement because while yes photographs can have huge impact on memory and and could bring more awareness to people, television provides a lot of information that increases awareness too. The things about photographs is that sometimes people don’t know what to take away from it and that’s why television in my opinion increase the public’s awareness to what may be going on.

"Today everything exists to end in a photograph" pg 19

I don’t think that there will ever be a time where photography doesn’t play a huge role in society. I think that as time goes on it will play an even bigger role and we will never escape it because of how much it brings.
